Skin needling, also called Microneedling therapy, is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles. The needles are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through the process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis, there is improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks. Microneedling is a non-laser, non-surgical treatment that causes the skin to stimulate new collagen production. This is important because as we age our ability to regenerate new skin cells and collagen diminishes.

RejuvaPen is the microneedling device used in our practice. The areas that can be treated with Rejuvapen Microneedling are:

  • Face

  • Chest

  • Neck

  • Stretch Marks

  • Scars

Microneedling has proved to be a simple and fast method for safely treating wrinkles and scars. Because the epidermis remains intact, the procedure can be repeated safely and is also suited to regions where laser treatments are not typically performed. The Microneedling procedure can be easily personalized by going deeper on some areas where skin damage requires a more aggressive approach.

What Should I Expect with Microneedling?

During the session, Microneedling is uncomfortable. We provide patients with a topical numbing cream that should be applied 30 minutes prior to the Microneedling appointment. The Microneedling treatment itself feels a bit like sandpaper going over the skin. Some areas can be more sensitive than other, so parts of the session will be less comfortable than others. After the Microneedling treatment, patients generally don’t feel any discomfort, although the treated area is likely to be sensitive. Patients should expect to be very red the day of and the day after the Microneedling treatment.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Invisible Micro-injuries are introduced into the top layer of skin; this leads to stimulation of a wound healing response. During this wound healing response a natural cell shutdown occurs: eliminating damaged cells while replacing old collagen with NEW collagen! Over time this new collagen matures and remodels tightening, thickening, and overall improved appearance of the skin. Even more exciting, microneedling triggers your own natural growth factors resulting in scar-less healing.

What Is Microneedling Indicated For?

Microneedling treatments have a range of indications including:
-Fine lines and wrinkles
-Acne scars, post-surgical scars, lacerations and chickenpox scars
-Improvement in skin tone/texture and tightening
-Minimizes large pores
-Improves hyper-pigmentation
-Improves stretch marks
-Overall skin rejuvenation

Is the Face the Only Area that can be Treated?

No, in addition to the face, the neck and décolleté are common areas treated. Actually any area of the body can be treated that has scars or stretch marks

What Occurs During The Procedure?

It involves the use of a motorized hand held device with a disposable 9 micro needle tip cartridge. These needles are used to puncture the skin producing thousands of controlled micro-injuries as deep as the dermal skin layer. Hylauronic or Human Growth Factor are infused and massaged into your skin during the procedure.

How Long Does It Take?

It takes 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the severity and area being treated.

Is Microneedling Painful?

An anesthetic numbing cream is applied to the skin for about 30 minutes prior to the treatment and we find with this approach clients are very comfortable with the procedure.

What Is The Downtime?
After the procedure your skin will show signs of redness similar to a mild to moderate sunburn and may feel warm and tighter than usual. This will begin to subside in 24-72hrs after the treatment.

How Many Treatments Are Recommended?
We suggest a series of 4-6 sessions depending on what the treatment is for. Patients may notice healthier looking skin right away and final results continue to improve 3-6 months following the last appointment.

How Long Do the Effects of Microneedling Last?

If you continue to maintain an effective home care regimen the effects should last 6 months to a year.

How Often Is Maintenance Required?
Collagen is continually being broken down. And no matter how much we do to slow down the aging process, we cannot stop it entirely. This is why maintenance is key. Once you have completed your series, we will determine what maintenance regimen is best for your overall skin care goals. Typically only 1-2 treatments are required per year.
